12: On a Sunday Afternoon

10.3.2010 - I've decided to start dressing up for first Sundays. I've tried it in the past, but never stuck to it. The most recent time I tried it, probably sometime around last year, all of my non-denim pantalones didn't fit me (read: I had gained weight and they wouldn't button up). However, now that I could fit them, I felt it would be a good time to try to bring that back.

This Sunday, I wanted something comfortable, but still nicer than the normal jeans and polo. Needless to say, for all my planning, I didn't plan this outfit out very well. I picked a regular long sleeve button-up, picked some shoes that matched, threw on some khakis and went off to church. I ended up in what JR called a "Pastor Paul outfit."(1)

The shoes were a pair that I hadn't worn in a while. It wasn't because I didn't like them or they were uncomfortable; the opposite was true on both accounts. I always just forgot I had them. As my shoe collection began to expand (we're talking the 70+ range at this point in time), I began looking for shoes that utilized different materials than the normal trio of leather, suede/nubuck and mesh. Snake skin, eel, ostrich, herringbone, any patterns that would make a shoe stand out from the norm. One such material caught my eye and I knew I had to adopt the pair into the family.

postin' up

Tweed. Nice. I really wish that Nike had more shoes that featured Harris Tweed. They're more comfortable than all leather and the tweed is more crease resitant than mesh. It might have just been a one time thing, seeing as they came in the "Harris Tweed Pack", but I can still hope. One more thing, you probably wouldn't know it by looking at it, but those are a women's shoe. A good looking sneaker is a good looking sneaker, regardless of it's a men's 9 or a women's 10.5. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. (2)

After church, the family decided to go to Sonoma Chicken Coop -nice change of pace from Khanh's, which we frequent on an almost bi-weekly basis at times. Also, it was a good thing because we all wanted to watch the Giants game so a place that had TVs was definitely preferable. Lunch with the family was great as always (the pictures speak for themselves, really). The Giants clinching the division and a nice afternoon pre-season flag-football game (sans flags) was just icing on my weekend cake.

(1) - The "Pastor Paul outfit", named after our actual friend Paul, is one that generally consists of a long sleeve shirt or knit sweater and khaki pants, preferably in pastel or non-striking patterns. The outfit has a very subtle, warm feel to it, but most distinctively makes the wearer appear like he is dressing much older than he actually is (aka "Lolo Paul")

(2) - I don't go out picking women's shoes on a regular basis (I promise). Women's sneakers tend to fit more narrow than men's. But, I will admit that this isn't my only pair of women's Nikes. I have two more and I bet $20 that no one would be able to pick them out. This is a standing bet until I reach the end of the One-Hundred, of course.

11: Salvaging a Saturday (Happy Birthday Miko)

10.2.2010 - I had a really big day planned for Saturday. Kara had an appointment with her mentorship program in San Francisco and I volunteered to drive her. Since they would have orientation and be meeting with their mentees from 9am-1pm, I had a nice four hour window to chill in the City, walk around and take some nice pictures. We woke up bright and early, I grabbed my Supremes and my North Face backpack (aka my "always be prepared" backpack) and we were off.

About fifteen minutes up the 101, I realized that I had forgotten to ask Kara for her D-SLR. Strike one. While this put a small hiccup in my plans to take pictures, I still had my backup point-and-shoot Canon in my backpack so I would just make do. After I dropped off Kara, I went to go meet a guy about a bike he listed on Craigslist. Since he was still sleeping when I called, I grabbed a hot black tea and a breakfast sandwich at Starbucks and ate at the park across the street. When he finally arrived, I checked out the bike. The Pista Concept is much prettier in real life than it is in any of the pictures. This one was no different, except for one problem. There was a crack.

During one of my many intense bicycle research sessions online, I read that cracked aluminum frames are deadly -once there is a crack, it can just give way at anytime. A quick Google search on my Blackberry confirmed what I had read previously. I wasn't comfortable picking up a cracked aluminum frame, no matter how minor the crack, no matter how beautiful the frame. I kindly asked the guy if he minded if I took a picture of it, just to see if anyone I knew had a second opinion, and went back to my car to get my camera out of my backpack. The only thing was that my "always be prepared" backpack apparently didn't get the memo -my camera wasn't there. Strike two and three, and it wasn't even 10am yet.

Bummed that I couldn't get the bike and that I had no camera to take pictures, I decided to take a stroll down Haight Street and hope for some good shopping karma. It took me more than half an hour to get there and more than half an hour to find parking. Shaky Google Maps App and weekend road construction were to blame, respectively. I Stopped by Stussy, but it didn't seem like they had their winter stuff in yet. If they did, it didn't look much different than their fall stuff we saw a few months ago. Next I hit up TRUE Clothing. While they had a lot of cool shirts, I've been trying to reduce the number of t-shirts in my wardrobe (as I already have a lot), so there was nothing good there. I saw a pretty sweet hat in TRUE Sole, but $50 is borderline a lot to pay for a New Era fitted, especially considering nine times out of ten I would probably rather wear a SF Giants hat. On down the street, I stopped by RVCA. They had new RVCA Haight/Ashbury shirts, but I didn't want to get a duplicate of the white/gold one I already have. They had some in local team colors too, but the black/orange one was drab and I don't think I'd ever get around to wearing the red/gold one (even though on second thought, it would match the Money Cats pretty well. hmm.) I crossed the street to make a stop by FTC, but they didn't have the Stefan Janoski's in my size and all the cool stuff they had on sale was in either S or XL. Kid Robot was my last stop before I headed back to my car. At least I could pick up a limited edition 2Tone and some new 2010 Series Dunnys. Ironic that I didn't buy any clothes as to not be "wasteful" with my money, but still managed to leave Haight with almost $30 in vinyl toys.

I went back to the Financial District to pick up Kara around 2pm. We headed into Union Square for some shopping for her and my obligatory stop at Niketown. After pizza at Blondies, we started our quest for Kara's new shoes. Macy's yielded few results and some pretty poor customer service. While the Nordstrom in the mall was much better in the customer service department, Kara still had no luck. Luckily, Kara struck gold when we stopped by Steve Madden. Kara got new shoes -I was happy.

My trip to Niketown yielded no such luck. I don't understand how a running windbreaker costs $90 while a track jacket of the same season costs only $65. I was looking for a windbreaker for winter and the track jacket was thicker than what I was looking for. You'd think that less fabric would equal less price, but I guess that's how Nike gets you. They didn't get me this time, though.

The drive back to San Jose was warm and gloomy, aka gross weather. I felt defeated and tired after walking away with no new pictures, shoes, jacket or bike. That being said, I was really looking forward to Miko's birthday party. Uncle Frank's boys all seemed to have come away with nicknames close to their name, but not quite. I don't know if it was adults shortening them or their sibling's baby mispronunciations, but Gabriel became Gabo, Michael became Miko and Rafael became Rafa. Just a lil tid bit in case you were wondering, "Who the heck would name a kid Miko?"

We swung by Great Mall to pick up some sweet new kicks for Michael. Being the middle child, he rarely gets the new new things. I've given his two older brothers several pairs of "almost new" shoes, but since Michael is still only a size 8, he has a few more years before I can hand him down anything. That being said, I wanted to find a nice pair for him.

It rarely happens like this, but once in a while you get lucky. I've been wanting to get a pair of Jordan Spizikes since 2008. However, their high retail price (and higher aftermarket price) always deterred me. Why buy those when I still had gaps in my quest for #1-23? I'll tell you why. Because you find them for $100 in Nike Outlet, that's why. The last size in a colorway that will add serious breadth to my shoe collection -this day was starting to turn up.

how many Jordans do you see?

Now for Miko. I went to the retro section, looking for more of a classic style or maybe some P-Rods in the aisle across. The end aisle displays didn't look to promising, but I went down the aisle just in case they had something else in the depths. Dunk CL's? Last size 8.5? These shoes were almost worth getting at full retail price, but finding them this far out from release in Miko's size was a gift. (No pun intended... ok, maybe it was.)

I laced up my Spizikes in the mall food court for two reasons 1) I wanted to wear something fresh to the party and didn't feel like wearing my Supremes and 2) wanted to see if Kara would notice that I had changed shoes (tired from the long day, she was waiting in the car). As I was lacing them up, an older brotha passing by stopped and said, "Man, those kicks are clean!"

"Nike Outlet!" I exclaimed in return.

I ninja'd the extra bag into my trunk, and we headed to Michael's party. While new shoes always brighten up my day, nothing has the power of melting away my stresses and troubles like a nice family party. Good food and good times with good people always make for a good great day.

10: Energy (pt. 1)

10.1.2010 - Back in the heyday of sneaker hype, Nike released multiple shoes in the same colorway and called it a "pack". For example, these Air Max 90's (which you will see in a later episode) came in the same pack as a similarly colored Air Force Two and Air Trainer One SC, the Escape Pack. By focusing on developing interesting color combinations, rather than forcing retro colorways on already popular shoes, Nike generated interest for retro models that people wouldn't have been otherwise familiar with.

It was a long week at work and I wanted a nice comfortable, non-Dunk shoe to change things up for Friday night. Cue, the Energy Pack. I never knew why they called it that...

ACG x In-N-Out

Back in the heyday of sneaker hype, Nike released a lot of retros (read: Dunks). To be fair, Nike did release a wide variety of older shoes, but the Dunk was certainly one of the front runners in the retro sneaker movement. Regardless, many other models gained shine due to the overall resurgence of the retro trend. Among these other shoes was the Air Wildwood.

The Nike ACG line was originally intended to give Nike reach into the outdoors gear market. However, as we all know, utility isn't always the primary reason sneaker collectors ultimately purchase new shoes. Whether it be basketball shoes, running shoes, boots or even driving shoes (ya, remember those?) nine times out of ten, form trumps function when choosing your new pair to rock. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder and a clean colorway should make for a nice shoe, regardless of if the model is "popular" or not.

Nike Air Wildwood - Chino/Fennel- Net -Dark Obsidian ["Energy"]
+ H&M Short Sleeve Button-up + Levi's 514 Premium

Back before the heyday of sneaker hype, people bought/wore what they wanted. It didn't matter what other people perceived to be cool. If you buy shoes or wear clothes or do certain things because you think other people will think you're cool, then you're doing it for the wrong reasons and in the end you're going to be left with a bunch of junk that you regret buying. I say, buy wear rock watch listen to read say play ride drive do what you like. You will never have to live your life vicariously through someone else if you just did what you wanted to do in the first place.

Who would've though such a subtle shoe could evoke such an emotional topic? I guess "Energy" wasn't so far off target as I thought.

It's been fun writing this blog so far. I really hope you guys have enjoyed reading it as much as I've enjoyed writing. There's a lot of people who put up with a lot of shenanigans from me in order for me to get all the right pictures in there, so I just wanted to say a special thanks to Joy, Miko, Kara and Mel.

That being said, here's a recap in case you missed anything.

9: Since '97

09.29.2010 - I've said before, that the great things in life have a tendency to stand the test of time. Great friends are definitely one of those things.

I transferred to Liberty Baptist in the 1996-97 school year. Being the new kid making my second transfer in four years didn't help my already somewhat "shy" attitude, but I put my good foot forward and soon made some close friends. After I left the school in 1998, I didn't think I would ever really hang out with those guys again, but like I said, good friends tend to stand the test of time. After graduating from different high schools, after I went away for college for a few years, after more than 10 years from the first day I sat in class with them, I still talk to Ed and Pat, and I still hang out with them and our "Crew" when I can. We're older now, but can still laugh at the same things. I love that... (shout out to Ed's mom)

It was Ed's birthday today and we were going out to dinner. Even though I knew they wouldn't notice, I wanted to pick a pair of shoes that had some significance.

shiny

The Air Max '97s are one of the symbolic pairs in my collection. In high school, a group of classmates and I got into a discussion with a teacher about why we buy expensive sneakers. We couldn't afford to buy those shoes when we were kids and our parents wouldn't buy them for us. But now that we're older and have jobs and can afford them for ourselves, they brought a sort of nostalgic fulfillment.

While I always thought Jordans were cool, the shoes that I always wanted growing up were the shiny ones with the cool features and the big Air Max bubbles. The Penny's. The Pippen's. The Barry Sanders'. But the Air Maxes? Those were almost like holy grails for me. Not only were they iconic and well designed, but they were expensive -more expensive than anything my parents would consider buying for me. I could never have them as a kid. When I was in college and my friend Andrew told me he had an extra pair for sale, I had to have them.

Crew, since '97

"Aren't those the shoes that Larry used to have?" Pat said as we were walking out from Buca.
"Yeup."
Looks like they did notice. While the group of friends knew I was "into shoes" Pat and Roland were generally the only ones who paid any attention or had any idea what was up.

After dinner, we spent a few hours outside the restaurant -talking, laughing, telling stories, taking pictures... No need to go places and do things if you're just enjoying each other's company. Good times... good times. Happy Birthday, Ed.
