10: Energy (pt. 1)

10.1.2010 - Back in the heyday of sneaker hype, Nike released multiple shoes in the same colorway and called it a "pack". For example, these Air Max 90's (which you will see in a later episode) came in the same pack as a similarly colored Air Force Two and Air Trainer One SC, the Escape Pack. By focusing on developing interesting color combinations, rather than forcing retro colorways on already popular shoes, Nike generated interest for retro models that people wouldn't have been otherwise familiar with.

It was a long week at work and I wanted a nice comfortable, non-Dunk shoe to change things up for Friday night. Cue, the Energy Pack. I never knew why they called it that...

Back in the heyday of sneaker hype, Nike released a lot of retros (read: Dunks). To be fair, Nike did release a wide variety of older shoes, but the Dunk was certainly one of the front runners in the retro sneaker movement. Regardless, many other models gained shine due to the overall resurgence of the retro trend. Among these other shoes was the Air Wildwood.

The Nike ACG line was originally intended to give Nike reach into the outdoors gear market. However, as we all know, utility isn't always the primary reason sneaker collectors ultimately purchase new shoes. Whether it be basketball shoes, running shoes, boots or even driving shoes (ya, remember those?) nine times out of ten, form trumps function when choosing your new pair to rock. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder and a clean colorway should make for a nice shoe, regardless of if the model is "popular" or not.

Back before the heyday of sneaker hype, people bought/wore what they wanted. It didn't matter what other people perceived to be cool. If you buy shoes or wear clothes or do certain things because you think other people will think you're cool, then you're doing it for the wrong reasons and in the end you're going to be left with a bunch of junk that you regret buying. I say, buy wear rock watch listen to read say play ride drive do what you like. You will never have to live your life vicariously through someone else if you just did what you wanted to do in the first place.

Who would've though such a subtle shoe could evoke such an emotional topic? I guess "Energy" wasn't so far off target as I thought.
